Basic Operational Member (Field Tech) Requirements. The following requirements apply to all new members of CLSAR and must be completed before a member will receive operational status. Upon completion of the following, the member should make a request to take the CLSAR Basic Field Skills Test and the MSDN Canine SAR Tech written test.
ICS/NIMS – Complete and have on file the following courses:
IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System, I-100.
IS-200 ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents.
IS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction
IS-100 and IS-200 replace IS-195. If you have already taken IS-195 you do not need to take IS-100 and IS-200. All of these courses are available to take independent study over the Internet through the FEMA Independent Study Program at www.training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/ and are offered free of charge.
Search Management – Complete the following:
A minimum of 12 hours participation in mock search exercises (at least 4 hours should be at base in a command function).
A minimum of 4 hours of observation on an actual CLSAR mission (see CLSAR mission observer guidelines).
Medical – Maintain and have on file the following certifications:
Basic First Aid Certificate course.
American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR with AED.
Current certification at a more advanced level (First Responder, Registered Nurse, etc.) will substitute for the above requirements.
Navigation – Complete the following:
CLSAR Map and Compass packet.
Participate in 2 orienteering events.
CLSAR GPS packet.
Locate 5 geocaches from www.geocaching.com
Communications – Complete the following:
Basic Radio Operator Course.
12 hours base radio at mock search or trainings (at least 2 hours, preferably 4, at a mock search).
Sufficient real world experience or Amateur Radio License may substitute for the Basic Radio Operator Course.
Survival – Complete the following:
A cold weather (less than 40 degrees F predicted overnight low) overnight bivouac using ONLY the contents of your normal search pack (no tents or sleeping bags allowed).
Build an improvised shelter
Start a fire without use of matches or lighter.
Demonstrate proper use of a signal mirror.
This needs to be supervised for safety. Items 2-4 can be demonstrated while doing the overnight bivouac.
Physical Fitness – Complete the following:
While in uniform with the required gear, complete a hike of three (3) miles over varied terrain in one and a half (1-1/2) hours.
Lift a 50 pound item onto and off of the tailgate of a full-size pickup truck or similar vehicle. It should be a clean lift (don't drag the item out of the truck and let it fall to the ground).
With a partner, carry a 200 pound load a distance of 50 feet. This should be done as either a blanket or a stretcher carry.
Canine Medical – Complete the following:
Canine First Aid course including CPR.
Watch CLSAR Canine First Aid Video.
Records – The following should be complete and up to date:
Canine Training/Certification Log (if applicable). This log should contain a record of all training done with the Canine as well as any certifications earned and actual missions.
Personal Training/Certification Log (may be included in Canine Log). This log should contain a record of all other training as well as any certifications earned and actual missions.
Personal/Canine Liability/Emergency File. This file should contain the following:
FBI Background Check.
Home Owners Insurance.
Emergency Contact information.
Canine Vaccination Records.
Canine Emergency information.
Mantracking – Complete the following:
Universal Tracking Services Track Aware course or UTS In-House class minimum 16 hours.
Miscellaneous skills – Complete the following:
CLSAR Ropes and Knots packet.
Methamphetamine class.
